John Hopkins University has more than enough academic prestige to its name to draw some of the country’s best undergraduate prospects to Baltimore. Now, thanks to the charitable foundation of a late construction magnate, the school is better positioned to attract promising engineering students.

James Clark, who died last year at 87, was the CEO of Clark Construction Group and a trustee for Johns Hopkins University and its medical school. His foundation has awarded the school with $15 million to create a new need-based scholarship program. The award is the largest donation the Whiting School of Engineering has ever received, according to JHU Hub.

Ten freshman engineering students were already selected to be the first round of Clark Scholars this year.

Ronald J. Daniels, JHU’s president, said in a statement that the gift “continues Jim’s vision” to create a school that generates leaders in engineering. Ed Schlesinger, dean of the engineer school, added in the school’s statement that “we are all the beneficiaries of Mr. Clark’s counsel and enduring vision.”

Clark previously donated $10 million in 1998 to build the school’s biomedical engineering building, named after him, and gave another $10 million eight years ago to create an endowment for the engineering school’s deanship.
